About me
I am a traditional musician who also plays with circuits, programming and hacking in general. By day I work as an electrical/computer engineer at a small company in Wichita called PWI, Inc. At night I am the Concertmaster of the Wichita Symphony Orchestra (WSO). I am also Director of WSU's Center for Research in Arts, Technology, Education, and Learning (CRATEL) and a founder of Hack.Art.Lab. I stepped down as a a Tenured Associate Professor of Violin at Wichita State University in 2008.
From 2003 to 2005 I hung out as a graduate research assistant at Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Laboratory. I cannot say enough amazing things about the place. I started at the lab exploring music perception and performance with machines. By the end, the bulk of my research centered around digital media manipulation as a learning tool for youth.
These days much of my energy goes to both CRATEL and Hack.Art.Lab (HAL). The organizations are similar, but membership is different since CRATEL is WSU-based and HAL is community based. Both organizations explore technology with an artistic bent, or sometimes the arts with a technology bent. Both organizations also explore new learning models for youth and adults, teachers and students.
Here's the pitch: if you want to make a new digital instrument, wonder how video can be manipulated realtime in new ways as performance, or have some other crazy tech/art idea check out CRATEL or Hack.Art.Lab. A good time to check out CRATEL is during our Friday afternoon Build Days. You can also join the CRATEL builder's email list. I'd tell you to visit the HAL site but you must be already there if you are reading this. You could still shop to join another HAL group, tho.
